The Pristine Pools: A Guide to the Freshest Natural Pools in the Region

When we were choosing the location for Wildhomestay, water quality was at the top of our list. Unlike many regional rivers and public swimming spots down-valley that unfortunately suffer from runoff, crowds, and litter, our valley is blessed with Grade 1 natural spring water.

Flowing straight from the high peaks, these waters are about as clean, natural, and untouched as it gets. For generations, locals have used these hidden spots to escape the heavy summer heat.

If you want to skip the crowded, chlorinated pools and experience true wilderness cooling, here are our top three secluded mountain swims, along with how to hike, bike, or run to them.

    1. The Chilled Pools
    (The Perfect Afternoon Stroll)

    • The Vibe: Easy, scenic, and deeply relaxing.
    • The Route: An easy 4km walk that winds through local villages, vibrant farmland, and rolling hills before hitting two quiet river pools.
    • Best For: A casual afternoon out. Time it right so you can catch the sunset dipping behind the majestic Qingliangfeng (Cool Peaks Mountains) on your walk back.

    2. The Mountain Stream Gorge
    (The Reward Trek)

    • The Vibe: Rugged, rewarding, and deeply immersive.
    • The Route: This one requires some sweat. A steep, punchy uphill climb takes you directly out of the village and into a secluded mountain stream. From there, you’ll rock-hop down the stream to find your private dipping pools.
    • Pro-Tip: Make a full day of it. Upgrade to our Van Picnic Optionโ€”weโ€™ll drive out to a meeting point to drop off cold drinks and a fresh lunch, letting you refuel before a beautiful, slow descent back to the lodge.

    3. The High-Alpine Valley Pools
    (The Multi-Sport Adventure)

    • The Vibe: Epic, expansive, and crystal clear.
    • The Route: These are the largest, most stunning pools in the area. Bring your own rig or rent one of our bikes and tackle a scenic 20km climb up to a remote mountain village. From there, drop your bike and hike about a kilometer into the gorge.
    • Want more? If you want to log extra miles, this valley connects to longer 5km, 10km, and 20km trail loops.
    • Logistics: If you prefer to save your legs for the water, you can book a van transport there and back. Alternatively, for the ultra-runners, this route follows a prime section of our Ultra50 course.

โš ๏ธ Wildhomestay Safety & Leave No Trace Principles

We love sharing these secret spots, but they remain pristine because they are respected. Please follow our the outdoor rules:

    • Never Swim Alone: Mountain streams are dynamic. Always head out with a buddy.
    • Pack It Out: Absolutely zero tolerance for litter. These waters are Grade 1โ€”letโ€™s keep them that way.
    • Respect the Current: Pay close attention to weather and water levels before jumping in.

  • Ride Dirty Weekend

    Ride Dirty Weekend

A bit last-minute but this weekend, 6th & 7th September, we will be doing a gravel training weekend. Cannot make that? Might also do one the following weekend as well. PM to add to group!

Freshen up those off-road legs and gravel skills!

Beginners: You can try out on two flatish sections. Focus on braking, cornering and steep hill climb starts. We will do some drills with you and provide feedback so you can focus on building your confidence and having fun!

Intermediate to advanced: focus on whatever you like ๐Ÿ™‚ and a good chance to test out your gear.

Over evening beers we will chat about gravel races, events weโ€™ve done, tire pressures and enjoy a BBQ together.

Its Free! No cost to join if you are our guest, and we will also provide a complimentary van, cold refreshments and nibbles. FYI we will start super early to try and beat the serious heat. Bring your own gravel or mountain bike or rent one of ours for two days at half cost. Want to stay an extra night (Thursday or Sunday) and we will provide that night free!

Saturday: reservoir and Daming gravel – Beginner 50km and 95km intermediate, 2 to 3 gravel segments. We will do some short repeats, testing out different tire pressures. One timed challenge segment per day with a fun little gift for the top 3. Feeling super strong, and if overcast, then add the Botanical climb.

Sunday: black hills gravel – 50km, 3 gravel segments. Test out tubeless tire puncture repair on our test tires. A skill you should know!

Book rooms the usual way, www.wildhomestay.com and tell our wechat service account to add you to our weekend gravel group.  Warning! We will check that you have insurance (if not 30rmb) and sign a waiver!
